Fully Outdoors / Con sol, lluvia, y nieve, nosotros siempre afuera.

After working closely with Dana Schurholtz at Vashon Green School for 4 years, I learned that the outdoors offers a multitude of benefits for children's physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
Here are some key reasons why outdoor play is crucial:

  • Physical Health and Development: Outdoor play provides children with ample opportunities for physical activity, promoting overall health and well-being. Running, jumping, climbing, and playing games outdoors help children develop gross motor skills, coordination, strength, and balance. It also encourages a more active lifestyle, reducing the risk of obesity and related health issues.

  • Sensory Stimulation: The outdoors is a sensory-rich environment. It exposes children to a wide range of sights, sounds, textures, and smells, stimulating their senses and supporting sensory integration. This exposure contributes to the development of their sensory processing abilities, cognitive skills, and overall sensory awareness.

  • Cognitive and Problem-Solving Skills: Outdoor play fosters cognitive development and problem-solving skills. Natural environments present children with unpredictable elements and challenges that require them to think critically, make decisions, and find creative solutions. They learn to navigate obstacles, calculate risks, and adapt their play, fostering cognitive flexibility, resilience, and resourcefulness.

  • Imagination and Creativity: The open space and freedom of outdoor play spark children's imagination and creativity. Whether building forts, inventing games, or exploring natural elements, the outdoors provides endless possibilities for imaginative play. Children create stories, pretend play, and engage in make-believe scenarios, enhancing their narrative skills, symbolic thinking, and creativity.

  • Connection with Nature: Outdoor play allows children to develop a connection with the natural world. They learn about plants, animals, and ecosystems, fostering an appreciation for the environment and a sense of stewardship. Nature exploration promotes curiosity, scientific inquiry, and ecological awareness, fostering a lifelong love for the natural world.

  • Social Skills and Collaboration: Outdoor play offers valuable social interactions and opportunities for children to develop and practice social skills. It encourages cooperative play, communication, negotiation, and teamwork as children engage in group activities and games. They learn to share, take turns, resolve conflicts, and develop empathy and social bonds with their peers.

  • Emotional Well-being: Outdoor play has a positive impact on children's emotional well-being. The freedom and space provided by outdoor environments promote a sense of freedom, self-expression, and relaxation. Being in nature has a calming effect, reducing stress, anxiety, and promoting mental health. Outdoor play also encourages a sense of joy, wonder, and awe, fostering a positive emotional state.

  • Outdoor play is vital for children's overall development. It promotes physical health, cognitive abilities, social skills, imagination, and emotional well-being. Providing children with regular opportunities for unstructured outdoor play not only enhances their immediate experiences but also sets the foundation for a lifelong connection with nature and a healthy lifestyle.
