mantener seco / keeping dry
Caterpillar Farm is fully outdoors! Remember: There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing choices.
Each day please bring: full set of extra clothing. Your child will get dirty here, so please come dressed to get messy!!
In the Winter children should wear
1. A base layer
2. A fleece layer, and
3. A waterproof layer on both top and bottom to stay warm.
A base layer is ideally made from Alpaca and Merino wools or a combination of the two are good choices.
On cold winter days an insulated waterproof coat is highly encouraged instead of a rain shell, but it must be waterproof.
Bogs insulated boots or muck boots are good choices, they still maintain warmth inside even when wet.
Scarves, hats, mittens or gloves are also good to send. Mittens are a better choice for our smallest students since they can be hard to get on. Waterproof is best.
A thin layer of Merino wool, silk, or modern synthetic worn next to the skin, keeping the body warm and dry, wicking away any moisture.
Cotton is never recommended as a base layer because it traps moisture next to the skin making you cold. Wool has natural temperature control and antibacterial properties.
Extra insulation like fleece or a quilted layer to sustain warmth. Make sure clothing fits well to ensure comfort, and don’t forget a mid layer warm mitten if needed, to wear under you outer waterproof layer. Mittens will keep little hands warmer than gloves.
Stay out of the elements with an insulated waterproof winter coat, rain jacket, snow or rain pants. Waterproof outer layer mittens. In warmer weather lightweight rain shell and pants. Don’t forget a warm wool hat or balaclava, and some waterproof boots or shoes.
